With the recent installation of the Sea Hives along the Pleasure Pier as well as forthcoming peninsula improvements, we wanted to create a bright and inspiring welcome to Weymouth Harbour that could be enjoyed both on land and viewed from sea.
The design had to be based around the marine/coastal prime location, collaborating with the Seahives project and needed to increase awareness of and promote the marine wildlife that exists along the Weymouth Jurassic Coastline.
A number of artists were contacted and after an anonymous vote the successful design by Claire Nuttall was chosen. As you can see the building is looking great already and whilst we’re going to keep the final design a surprise, we hope that you enjoy seeing how this art project will take shape!
Artist Biography Claire Nuttall - Artist, Model Maker, Illustrator, Sculptor, Maker of Stuff
Claire is based in Dorset and has been a self-employed artist for over 25 years.
She started her career painting film scenery at Pinewood Studios, and provided murals and sculptures for the Leisure and Tourism industry throughout the UK and Europe.
Claire has a studio in St Michaels Art and Vintage Quarter in Bridport, where she undertakes her own artwork, projects, commissions and classes.
Claire has worked on many community projects, recent commissions include pavement murals for Dorset Police, Poole Council, Swanage Council, hand painted wildlife signs for Dorset Council and a 40-seat cement amphitheatre sculpture at County Hall, Dorchester.
Claire is also one of the artists featured in the Weymouth Mural Trail and has another mural located outside the Nothe Fort.
Claire lives in West Bay, and when not in her studio can be found loving the local scenery and beach walks with her family and dog, Paddy Woof.
